Nursing Informatics and Its Importance in Patient Care

    What Is Nursing Informatics?

Nursing informatics is the use of technology and information to help nurses provide safe and effective patient care. It combines nursing knowledge with computer technology to improve communication, documentation, and decision-making. According to the American Nurses Association (2023), nursing informatics helps nurses manage patient information and use technology to improve the quality of care. Technology plays an important role in healthcare because nurses depend on accurate information when making decisions about their patients.

How I Use Nursing Informatics in My Nursing Practice

As a registered nurse working at Regency Hospital in critical care, I use nursing informatics throughout my shift. Many of my patients require ventilators, tracheostomies, feeding tubes, IV medications, and close monitoring. I use electronic health records (EHRs) to review medication orders, laboratory results, allergies, and patient assessments. I also document changes in patients’ conditions and communicate important information to other members of the healthcare team.

For example, when caring for a patient receiving IV antibiotics, I review the medication orders, laboratory results, and vital signs to help determine whether the patient is responding to treatment. Having this information available electronically helps me recognize changes that may require further assessment or notification of the provider.

According to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (n.d.), electronic health records provide healthcare professionals with access to patient information that supports clinical decisions and improves coordination of care.

    Why Nursing Informatics Is Important

I believe nursing informatics is important because it helps reduce errors, improves communication, and allows nurses to provide more organized care. Working in critical care has taught me how quickly a patient’s condition can change. Having access to updated patient information helps me make informed decisions and provide safer care. Although technology is helpful, nurses must continue to use their clinical judgment and protect patient confidentiality.
